The holiday rush is in full swing as shoppers try to beat the clock to have their items delivered in time for the holidays. To help with the frenzy, many retailers are participating in Free Shipping Day, which is on December 14th this year.
Held for one day in mid-December, the promotional event allows consumers to shop from both large and small online merchants that offer free shipping with guaranteed delivery by Christmas Eve. As any shopper would know, you can easily double the cost of your gift items just by getting hit with shipping costs, and that’s where Free Shipping Day comes into play.
History of Free Shipping Day
Started in 2008 by Luke and Maisie Knowles, founders of freeshippingday.com, it’s meant to extend the online shopping season. During the first Free Shipping Day, several hundred merchants participated and media attention was unusually high. In 2009, more than 750 retailers took part, with over 350,000 sales taking place through freeshippingday.com, and merchant participation has more than doubled each subsequent year. This is good news for both retailers and last-minute shoppers.
